Meet Candidate

The decision to run for Lawrence Township Trustee honors the legacy of my mother, Jeanne Shelton, who devoted more than 40 years of service to Illinois families as Executive Director of the Carver Community Action Agency and the Boys and Girls Club. Growing up, I watched her lead with compassion, integrity, and an unwavering belief in lifting others up. Her example shaped who I am and inspired my lifelong commitment to public service.

Family has always been at the center of my life and my values. I have been married for 35 years to my husband, Marion County Superior Court Judge John Chavis II, and together we have raised our family with deep roots in the community. We are blessed with three children—John Chavis III, Elise Chavis, and Jordan Welch (Benjamin)—and are proud to welcome our newest family member, our grandson, Jeremiah Welch.

Our family’s experiences continue to guide my beliefs in service, fairness, and responsibility. Lawrence Township deserves leadership rooted in experience, empathy, and a clear understanding of the needs of working families, seniors, and those who rely on township services. I am ready to continue this legacy of service and to work every day to ensure our community remains strong, responsive, and inclusive.
